Interview with Austin Young on Never Apart

“Portraits by Austin Young” 2018, curated by Michael Venus at Never Apart in Montreal. https://www.neverapart.com/exhibitions/portraits/

Austin Young presents Images from a long and celebrated career in portrait photography. In many ways, Young is more accurately described as an image-maker: his projects illustrate the sublime qualities of character that make celebrated people unique. Based on a nuanced visual language of pop-culture iconography, his trademark style and techniques have captured a broad palate of musicians, artists and celebrities. Young confuses personality and identity issues in confrontational and unapologetic image-making of people who often mix gender roles or otherwise confound stereotypical constraints of socially-constructed identities.

A portrait of anyone who shows up in Drag - by Austin Young, Los Angeles, 2016

A portrait of anyone who shows up in drag, Los Angeles edition, 2016 by Austin Young. “It was EPIC. I took a individual portraits and a group photo of every amazing Drag Queen that came.“ This mini documentary is shot and edited by Emily Lacey. The City of West Hollywood, through WeHo Arts, is hosting an exhibition, A Brief History of Drag, which takes a historical look at the Los Angeles and West Hollywood drag scene from the late 1800s to today. As part of the opening reception in March 2016, noted photographer Austin Young assembled what may be largest gathering of people in drag ever photographed in one place at one time. The result is a spectacular composite artwork measuring 7.5’ x 7.5’ that Young assembled out of group and individual images taken on opening night; the work is titled Portrait of Anyone Who Shows Up in Drag, Los Angeles Edition, 2016. The final group photo will hang in the West Hollywood Library as part of A Brief History of Drag. The exhibit is a collaboration between the City of West Hollywood (through WeHo Arts and One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival), Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Advocate & Gochis Galleries, and CAP UCLA with assistance from the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. The exhibition is curated by Katie Poltz and Jessica-Jean Fowler Center (both from Los Angeles LGBT Center), and David John Attyah (Glendale Community College).

YOUNG ESTABLISHED HIS ART STUDIO FOR A 5 WEEK RESIDENCY AT POP TART GALLERY. THE ARTIST WAS PRESENT DURING GALLERY HOURS FOR PORTRAIT SITTINGS, WHICH EVENTUALLY FILLED THE WALLS OF THE GALLERY. THE PUBLIC BECAME THE SUBJECT OF THE EXHIBITION THROUGH THE PURCHASE OF THE POP CULTURAL REAL ESTATE OF THE GALLERY WALLS. PARTICIPATION EXTENDED BEYOND SIMPLY SITTING FOR A PORTRAIT - IT WAS A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS WHERE THE PARTICIPANTS DETERMINED THE PORTRAIT'S SIZE AND PLACEMENT. YOUNG WILL TRANSFORMED EACH PARTICIPANT INTO AN ART CELEBRITY AND FACEBOOK PROFILE PIC.

YOUR FACE HERE WAS A SOLO EXHIBITION BY ARTIST AUSTIN YOUNG THAT CHALLENGED THE NORMATIVE CONDITIONS IN WHICH PORTRAITS ARE PRODUCED AND EXHIBITED. YOUNG IS A CELEBRATED PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER AND ARTIST, WHOSE WORKS BLURS THE LINES, AND TRANSCENDS THE DISTINCTIONS, BETWEEN FASHION, PORTRAITURE, AND GENDER. FOR THIS EXHIBITION YOUNG OPENED HIS LENS ONTO THE PUBLIC.
